Is " Bella" the new "Passion"

The film "Bella", first prize winner at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival is scheduled to be shown tomorrow, 10/27 for one day only. Apparently, the life affirming film could not find a U.S. distributor. Apparently Hollywood is too busy tanking with anti-war, anti-American movies. Now churches and pro-life organizations are sponsoring group screenings of Bella just as they did for the Passion of Christ. Hope you'll join me at Union Square tomorrow.

Screening Locations and Times:

Union Square at 13th St. and Broadway at 5PM

Unions Square Stadium 14

Baghdad Diarist Losing Credibility on the Net

The New Republic is running a series of articles that claim to be written by Scott Thomas, a soldier serving in Iraq. The Baghdad Diarist relates shocking behavior by our soldiers but it stinks, folks. TNR must want to believe this tripe but I have my own source there and prefer to hear from Matt Sanchez, serving in the Reserves who has his own site, "Greetings from Iraq."

Here's what he writes about the Thomas Affaire. This is starting to smell like a Rather dumb stunt.

More on Bloomberg

My Mayor Bloomberg column brought some interesting emails from New Yorkers remembering other remarks that showed his "uncommon touch."

"Remember when the cops handed out thousands of parking tickets after a blizzard, and the Mayor told those who didn't like it to just dig out their cars and move them? He then had to reverse himself."

"His arrogance is becoming annoying. After the power cut two weeks ago on the Upper East Side he pronounced something like 'no big deal, all we have to do is reset a few clocks'. Well, it took our building several hours to restart the heat pumps for the air conditioning system and 48 hours to get the ventilation system working in our building, during a particularly humid period"

"You forgot that when people complained about snow removal "his highness" told
a press conference that if people thought they could do better they should
join the Dept of Sanitation."

To sum it best, however, writer Linda Stewart sent me a link to her Human Events article-

A Note to the RNC from an Ex-New Yorker

In response to my column "How to Get GOP Back to Basics," ex New Yorker Lee Anthony Nieves, now relocated to Charlotte, NC., suggested returning those fundraising letters from the RNC with the following "peso" attachment found on an anti-illegal immigration site. He feels this will let the RNC know how grassroot Republicans feel about their performance in Congress. Personally I try and avoid any overt criticism of our beleaguered president but on the issue of immigration amnesty he does need a wakeup call. Security first. Those here illegally can be dealt with later. We are all forever behind Bush on the war on terror and those Republicans retreating from that support will lose ours as well.

Happy Fourth of July America

I have a hard time understanding why so many people enjoy setting off fireworks. Before Rudy Giuliani started cracking down on illegal fireworks, Staten Island used to resemble London during the blitz. M80's used to be set off from early March till October. The sudden blasts would induce heart pounding gasps. Now the 4th is the only day when we hear neighborhood fireworks going off.

When I lived in Miami, people would go out on the fourth and shoot their guns in the air. Inevitably, the Miami Herald would report on deaths caused by falling bullets.

I live near the waterfront so if I wanted to I could glimpse the Macy's extravaganza in Manhattan but frankly, been there done that. IMHO the best fireworks were set off in Queens during the 1964 World's Fair. They would be blasted over a central fountain accompanied by classical music. The entire fair was a fairyland set of elegant pavilions from all over the world and the fifty states. Glorious.

We live in the most blessed country on earth and I hope we take just one moment to thank God and say a prayer for our troops in harms' way. God Bless America.

Congress Needs to view this

Ever wonder what a real hero looks like? They probably come from Texas like Marcus Luttrell and they probably don't consider themselves heroes. In fact, this last surviving member of that Navy Seal team ambushed in Afghanistan calls the conventional soldier who joined for college money and is now patrolling the streets in Iraq, the real hero. What this clip makes clear is that our rules of engagement are killing our soldiers who've been made to choose between opening themselves to danger or facing court charges back home if they silence the threat. Harry Reid and John Murtha are shamelessly demoralizing America's finest. Do you agree?

More on the Fuel For Truth event

One of the hardest points made by Sgt. Schappert was one that I've made in previous essays. "We did not lose in Vietnam, we lost here in the United States," he said. Former Viet Cong military leaders have admitted that they were very close to surrendering until they noted the growing peace movement. They realized that if they held out Americans at home would lose their will to fight. These same anti-war advocates are trying to lose it for us again. That's why organizations like Fuel For Truth and Protestwarrior.com are so important. They are opening the eyes of Americans to the reality of their enemy. Incidentally, Schappert said he is not Jewish.. He's Irish Catholic. The global war on terrorism should be important to all Americans, regardless of creed. Amen to that.

FFT's CEO, Joe Richards, explained why they reach out to the young. "We go to colleges because foreign countries are buying the minds of our best students. For example, the Saudi Royal family has donated $70 billion in the past 30 years to universities and programs to plant the seeds in our educational system," he said. Showing slides documenting its influence at Harvard, he went on to tell about FFT's boot camp program which teaches the history of Jewish people, Christians and Muslims from world-renowned experts. "You will learn about counter-terrorism from the experts you see on TV. Top communications experts in the world will teach you how to advocate on behalf of Israel and the US. " Here are some photos of the evening . Incidentally, I'm somewhere in the crowd like "Where's Waldo" and hard to find.

How believable is Michael Moore's "Sicko"?

Supposedly Michael Moore's new documentary "Sicko" is available for viewing on the Internet but I haven't bothered to check that out. His latest opus has received praise from the left and right for exposing the sad state of our health system. I ask the question- compared to what? Reviewers of the film say Moore lauds the Cuban free healthcare system and Fred Thompson is challenging those who do so to realize that what the Cuban authorities show to outsiders is not what is available to ordinary Cubans.

I was sent a link to this site which allegedly contains photos taken by visitors and former citizens of the real Cuba. I have no way of verifying if these were taken in Cuba but if they were, Moore and others were duped. Like all his documentaries, Moore's "Sicko" should be regarded with some skepticism.

Good Immigration Advice from Another Republican President

President Bush is a good and compassionate man and I hope a good student of history but I wonder if he has read what another Republican president, Theodore Roosevelt, wrote one hundred years ago. In a letter, which is in the manuscript division of the Library of Congress, there is a statement that is very relevant to our current immigrant crisis.

'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.'

Theodore Roosevelt 1907

Who Deserves More Attention? Paris or our Troops?

The same day that the Drudge Report ran the photo and story of Paris Hilton screaming after being sent back to jail, I received the following email from moveamericaforward.org that puts everything in perspective:

The past 24 hours have seen television, radio, print and online news organizations fixated with the subject of Paris Hilton.Meanwhile, our nation has over 150,000 men and women of the United States military fighting a war against terrorism on the frontlines of Iraq and Afghanistan. For the next week, meteorologists predict temperatures in some parts of Iraq will range between 110 - 120 degrees. Our troops are once again facing the dual challenges of stifling heat, wearing 50-100 pounds of body armor, uniforms, equipment and supplies, and facing attack from Islamic militants determined to kill U.S. troops. On the homefront our troops hear reports of the Senate Majority Leader declaring, "this war is lost," and see efforts by Congress to cut off their funding.

Whenever our troops achieve success in their day-to-day operations it receives little or in many cases no media coverage. It seems like they can't win for losing. We here at Move America Forward want the men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces to know that they ARE appreciated.

That's why we're asking you to join us in sponsoring a " Gatorade and Beef Jerky for Our Troops" or " Coffee and Cookies for Our Troops" care package.

Between now and the 4th of July we're going to step up our efforts to ship thousands upon thousands of these " Support Our Troops Care Packages."

Please help us make this effort a success by sponsoring a package - and please include a personal message of support with each package. You'll see a place on the order form where you can type in your message, which will be affixed to each item in the packages that are sent. If Paris Hilton deserves saturation media coverage and attention from this nation for 2 days straight, don't you think our troops deserve recognition and attention from each of us as well?

Coma Victim Awakens After 19 Years

One has to wonder what supporters of Michael Schiavo's efforts to end his wife Terry's life think when they see articles like this. The Polish man who awoke after 19 years in a coma was cared for by a loving spouse. Terry's parents would have cared for her as well if her husband had allowed them to but that was not to be. This case was regarded as a pro-life issue which in a sense it was. However as Nat Hentoff reminded us in an editorial for the Washington Times, "I covered the Terri Schiavo case for more than four years, going against nearly all of the other media in emphasizing and documenting that this was not a "right to die" case, but a disability-rights case. And that's why many leading disability-rights organizations filed legal briefs unreported by most of the press on her behalf……When Terri Schiavo died, I wrote that hers was the longest public execution in American history. Even the most monstrous murderer on death row would have received far more due process of law than she did. " Jan Grzebski was lucky to be living in Poland.

Immigration Protesters a Diverse Group

When NY ICE members protested outside Mayor Bloomberg's East Side residence, they were met with opposition by passing students who resorted to name calling and obscene gestures. Co-founder of the group, Joanna Marzullo, is used to this form of debate as shown in these photographs taken last year at a previous protest.

Although the group has been called racist by those who support open borders, its makeup is diverse and includes many legal immigrants. Here is its mission statement:

"New Yorkers for Immigration Control and Enforcement is completely open to all Americans and legal immigrants who believe in enforcement-ONLY immigration legislation. Our members are a diverse and politically heterogeneous assembly, united in our common struggle to protect our borders and nation. We believe that the problem of illegal mass migration can be solved through border control, attrition of the existing illegal alien population and the enforcement of immigration laws, employer sanctions. NY ICE is not owned by any partisan political group, corporation, or lobby, allowing us to represent the American legacy of free speech at its most untainted."

Further info on the group can be found on its website or contact Ms. Marzullo at progressrose@yahoo.com

Last Word on Rosie

With all the hype about Rosie O'Donnell leaving The View after her on air battle with co-host Elizabeth Hasselbeck, the Internet ran the heated squabble over and over. Most of the online commentators were clearly on Rosie's side. It is also clear how much Ms. Hasselbeck is loathed by viewers who regard her as a spoiled, unintelligent "princess", the antithesis of Ms.O'Donnell.

I've never watched the show except for snippets shown on AOL so I'll refrain from commenting on the incident or the program. However, after seeing this video of Ms. O'Donnell warming up the studio audience it's quite clear that the 9/11 conspiracy theorists have allowed their hatred of the president to influence their ability to reason. What is even more disturbing is the audience reacting favorably to her naive remarks which have been discredited by experts. Apparently The Bush Derangement Syndrome is a reality and widespread in New York City and I hope someone finds a cure for those affected and restores them soon to sanity

Catholic League Takes on Bill Maher

Bill Donohue, President of The Catholic League, took on Bill Maher in a press release asking Time Warner to pay attention to the vitriolic comments by comedian Bill Maher made on his HBO show. Considering the fact that Don Imus was fired by WCBS and MSNBC for his racially ignorant remarks about the Rutgers women's basketball team, what are the chances that Bill Maher will suffer the same fate? Highly unlikely.

In a previous press release, Donohue made an effort to present the truth about the Inquisition which is missing from a PBS program weeks ago, "The Secret Files of the Inquisition." Clearly, Catholic bashing is in vogue on both network and cable television and they wonder why the ratings are down.

Right-Wing Times Readers

The New York Times's Empire Zone blog has an interesting post up about the fact that New York State's school spending is, on a per-student basis, the highest in the nation, according to a new Census Bureau report. But what's really interesting are the comments, which note that New York's performance isn't the highest in the nation, blame the teachers union, and suggest vouchers as an alternative. Who knew the Times had such right-wing readers? The comments are worth reading, as some of them are pretty intelligent.

The True Images of our Military

In today's column I mention Air Force Master Sgt. John Gebhardt whose photo showing him cradling an injured Iraqi child to sleep has touched many of us who appreciate the valiant job our military is performing. I'm including his photograph here so readers can appreciate the truth about our military's character.
